Public values

Guideline and Self-Assessment for Immersive Experiences (IX)

Public values guideline

As with all digital applications, IX can be misused. Since CIIIC aims to create not only economic but also societal impact, public values are a key part of the program.

PublicSpaces, Waag Futurelab, and the Rathenau Institute conducted research on behalf of CIIIC into safeguarding public values in immersive experiences (IX).

In line with this research by the Rathenau Institute, the following seven values have been prioritized:

  • Privacy
  • Autonomy
  • Democracy
  • Health
  • Safety
  • Inclusivity/Participation/Non-Discrimination
  • Sustainability

Based on these values, an initial version of a learning guideline and self-assessment has been developed. This forms the basis for CIIIC's activities. It is crucial that IX users are not harmed in any way, that financial interests in a production are clearly stated, and that IX professionals operate transparently.

The guideline and self-assessment are intended for everyone involved in Immersive Experiences (IX): developers, designers, researchers, educators, users from the public and private sectors, and other stakeholders.

The relevance of this guideline is clear. The best way to formulate and apply it in this fast-evolving field remains an ongoing subject of research. The Public Values Guideline and Self-Assessment are therefore learning tools that will be continuously refined throughout the CIIIC program.
